Mother-of-pearl is obtained from the inner layer of some shellfish. It is a valuable material characterized by iridescent pearly white color, also equipped with high mechanical properties of hardness and flexural strength. The shell’s inner layer is made up of several sheets of calcium carbonate (aragonite or calcite), slightly wavy and arranged parallel to each other in order to form the iridescent layer by means of interference phenomena.
