The coconut buttons result from the drupe of the coconut palm. Cocos nucifera is a typical plant of tropical regions, where the temperatures are ideal for the ripening of the fruit. The drupe is an ovoid, whose internal pulp is enclosed by several layers: a hard brown shell (endocarp), which forms the seeds and is the part generally known as "coconut", an intermediate fiber (mesocarp) and a smooth and coriaceous outer peel (exocarp).
